Privacy policy

This policy explains how the Trig app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch handles your information. The trigmaps.nz website has its own privacy page. For privacy questions, contact trig@windybank.net.

Your data remains your data

I have no interest in selling your personal data or building profiles about you. Trig does not track you across apps or websites. I do not collect your tracks, routes and waypoints, and I do not store them on any server I run. Trig does not upload that library to me.

Your saved information stays on your devices and, when iCloud is available, in your private iCloud storage. Some features need to use the network, including iCloud sync, weather, map downloads and Apple Maps searches. Those are explained below. You choose whether to share an export or send me a problem report.

Your saved information

Your saved library includes the tracks, routes, waypoints, notes, favourites, search history and settings you create or import, along with any trips and packing lists. Trig stores this library only in the app on your devices and, when available, in your private iCloud storage. Copies you choose to export or share are covered below. Trig does not need a separate Trig account.

Location and recording

With your permission, Trig uses your location to show your position, find nearby places, record tracks and navigate. Recording can use location while the app is in the background. Recorded tracks can include coordinates, times, elevation, movement and accuracy information. Trig also uses motion and barometer readings where available to improve recorded elevation.

You can manage location and motion permissions in iOS Settings. Turning off a permission may stop the features that need it from working.

iCloud

When available, Trig uses Apple's iCloud to sync your saved information between your devices signed in to the same iCloud account. This includes tracks, routes, waypoints, trips, favourites, search history and some settings. Apple handles this information under its own terms and privacy policy. I cannot see your iCloud data.

Apple Health

If you choose to save a recording as a workout and give permission, Trig saves the workout and its route to Apple Health. The iPhone and iPad app does not read your Health records.

The Apple Watch app, with your permission, reads back the workouts and routes Trig saved, and the active energy, step count and cycling cadence it shows during a recording. It does not read your other Health records. What it reads stays on your devices and is never sent to me.

You can manage Health access in the Health app or iOS Settings. Deleting a track in Trig does not always delete the matching workout in Apple Health.

Online services

Some features contact other services. Every network request shows the receiving service your IP address.

• Apple. Offline maps and elevation data download from Apple's servers. Weather comes from Apple Weather, and a weather request includes the coordinates of the place you are looking at. Place searches send your search text and the map area to Apple Maps.
• Department of Conservation. Track alerts are fetched from DOC's website, and photos on track, hut and campsite pages load from doc.govt.nz. DOC sees which alerts or photos were asked for.
• MetService. Severe weather warnings are fetched from MetService's public warnings feed. The same feed is fetched for everyone, so it says nothing about where you are.

Trig's bundled information about tracks, huts, campsites, hunting areas and mountains works offline and sends nothing. Opening a link to another website, such as a DOC booking page or a forecast, is covered by that site's privacy policy.

Trig Plus

Apple handles subscription purchases and payments. Trig receives verified purchase and subscription information from Apple to decide whether Plus features are available, including through Family Sharing. Trig stores your subscription status on your device. I never receive your payment card details.

Family Sharing shares Plus access only. It does not share your tracks, routes or waypoints with your family.

Exports, sharing and deletion

You can export your saved data from User > Export my data, with or without Plus. The export contains the data on that device, so let iCloud sync finish first if you use more than one device. You choose where the export goes, and the receiving app or service handles that copy under its own policies.

Ending a subscription does not delete your data. Deleting the app removes its data from that device, but copies in iCloud, Apple Health and exports may remain. Manage those in the relevant Apple settings or destination. Contact me if you need help finding them.

Diagnostic history and Apple MetricKit

The diagnostic history and MetricKit reports described here stay on your device. I can only see them if you choose to send me a report. Trig never sends them automatically.

Trig keeps a limited diagnostic history on your device to help find bugs. It records selected app events, such as opening a tab, starting or saving a recording, importing a file, downloading maps, permission changes and technical failures. Events include times, app and iOS versions, a random identifier for the current app session and selected error codes.

Apple's MetricKit gives Trig crash, hang and performance information on your device. This can include technical call stacks, crash codes, processor time, memory use, disk writes and running time. Trig keeps only selected fields, not Apple's full reports.

The diagnostic history does not include your coordinates, the map areas you view, track or route names, your saved library, search text, Health records, device name, advertising identifiers, screenshots or screen recordings. It does not use a permanent user or device identifier.

History is on by default. In User > Report a problem you can turn it off or clear it. Turning it off deletes the stored history and stops Trig from keeping new events or receiving new MetricKit reports. It does not change Apple's own diagnostics settings. Events and MetricKit reports are kept for up to 48 hours, within storage limits. This storage is left out of device backups and iCloud sync.

Sending a report and contacting support

Preparing or reviewing a report does not send it anywhere. You choose whether to share it and who receives it. A report includes your description, the diagnostic history, selected MetricKit information and a random report identifier. Leave out anything private you don't want to share.

If you email a report or a question to trig@windybank.net, I receive it along with your email address and name, so it is not anonymous. I use it only to fix problems and answer you, never for advertising or profiling. I delete diagnostic attachments within 30 days after the issue is resolved, or sooner if you ask.

Advertising and analytics

Trig has no advertising, no session replay and no third-party analytics. Apple may separately give me App Store and TestFlight statistics and crash reports, depending on your Apple settings.

Children

Trig collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

I will update this policy when Trig's features or data handling change. The date at the top shows the latest version. For help with the app, see the support page.
