This page explains how the Trig website at trigmaps.nz handles your information. The Trig iPhone and Apple Watch app has its own privacy policy. For privacy questions, contact trig@windybank.net.
The short version
- There are no accounts, no sign-in and no payments on this site.
- There is no advertising, no analytics and no tracking across sites. This site sets no cookies.
- Your browser fetches photos straight from DOC, so DOC sees your IP address. Map tiles come from this site.
- Weather, alerts and warnings are fetched by the site's own server, so those services don't see your IP address.
Map tiles
The topographic map, hillshade and slope shading tiles come from this site's own server, made from Toitū Te Whenua LINZ data. Your browser asks for the tiles covering the area you are looking at, and those requests are handled like any other page request (see "Hosting" below).
Photos from DOC
Photos on track, hut and campsite pages load straight from the Department of Conservation's website (doc.govt.nz), so DOC receives your IP address and browser details when a photo loads, and DOC's server may set its own cookies if your browser allows them. The site asks your browser not to tell DOC which page you were on.
Weather, alerts and warnings
When a page shows weather, alerts or warnings, your browser asks this site's server, which then asks Apple Weather, the Department of Conservation or MetService. They see the site's server, not you. A weather request sends Apple the page's location rounded to about a kilometre, never your own location. Answers are shared between visitors for a few minutes to keep the load down.
Your location
The map's locate button asks your browser for your location, and only when you press it. Your location stays in your browser to draw your position. It is never sent to this site.
What stays on your device
The map remembers which layers you switched on, using your browser's local storage. It stays on your device and you can clear it in your browser settings.
Hosting
The site runs on Cloudflare. To deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, Cloudflare processes each request, including your IP address and browser details, under its privacy policy. The site keeps short-lived request logs (the address asked for, the time and any error) for a few days to find and fix faults. They are not used to identify or profile anyone.

Links to DOC, MetService, Avalanche NZ, NIWA, ClimbNZ, Te Araroa and others open those sites, which have their own privacy policies.
Changes
If the site adds accounts or payments, this page will change before they go live. The date at the top shows when it last changed. See also the data sources and credits and the support page.
