The DOC Campsite Pass can be used at this campsite.
Campsite Pass bookings must be booked online before occupying a site. If you do not book, bookings may be made by campground staff (if present) and will incur a $10 service charge. Sites may not be available if you do not book.
Bookings
Bookings are open for stays up to 30 June 2027.
- If no availability shows online for your dates, the campsite is fully booked.
- No spaces are kept for campers arriving without a booking.
- Phone and in‑person bookings made at a visitor centre incur a $10 service fee.
- Same‑day bookings are available online until 8 pm if spaces remain.

Getting there
Otamure Bay (Whananaki) campsite lies almost 30 km north of Whangarei, near Whananaki North on Northland's East Coast.
Go past Hikurangi on SH1. Turn off SH1 at Whananaki North Road, which becomes Rockell Road, and travel 27 km. The campsite is 4 km past Whananaki shop and school.

Know before you go
- Wasps and wasp nests may be present.
- Northland reserve bylaws apply to Otamure Recreation Reserve.
- Camp host on-site year round.
- Check in from 2 pm.
- Camp office hours are 8 am to 8 pm. From 1 May to 1 September the office closes at 6 pm.
- Read the camp rules.
Gates: Camp gates and barrier arms are locked from 9:00 pm to 7:30 am. Only one vehicle at a time through the gates. Do not share your barrier arm code as it will only work once in either direction.
Water safety
If you plan to enjoy the water, learn how to stay safe when swimming, boating and fishing.
Rubbish and recycling
This campsite operates a ‘pack in, pack out’ policy for waste. There will be no rubbish collection. This includes compost and recycling.
The closest transfer station to the campsite is located at Hikurangi.
Activities
Walk in the nearby Motutara Recreation Reserve or the Watkin Powell Track.
Out on the headland there are several small, secluded beaches and some good fishing and diving spots.
