Waitengaue Track

From Woodland Road, the track follows the fence line and crosses Wairoa Stream. Continuing westwards it also crosses the Waitengaue stream a few times.

The track then follows the river and a side creek before climbing over a saddle. It continues along the tramway with more river crossings and then follows a tributary.

After crossing a steep saddle, the track descends into the Waitawheta valley. Turn right at the junction and walk 100 m to another junction. The hut is 100 m up from here.

Waitengaue Track begins on Woodland Road, off SH2 north of Katikati.

You must be well prepared when tramping on conservation land, especially on the longer day walks. Ensure you have strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen.

Mountain biking is not permitted.

Stay safe when crossing rivers and streams

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers or side streams, know how to cross safely and be prepared for if you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river or stream is flooded, you cannot find safe entry and exit points or are unsure it’s safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
