This replica tent-style hut was built in April 2016 by the Golden Bay Alpine Tramping Club and DOC staff. Tent camps are a hybrid between a hut and a tent and were once popular in New Zealand from the 1930s during the forestry service and deer stalker days.
The shelter is named after Frank and Berna Soper. In 1960, along with Keith Marshall, they formed the Golden Bay Alpine and Tramping Club. Frank led the building of three huts at Boulder Lake, Adelaide Tarn and Lonely Lake. Frank and Berna together with Stan Northcote-Bade were instrumental in persuading the government of the time to form the North West Nelson Forest Park in 1970, which eventually became Kahurangi National Park.
