Martin's Hut

Martin’s Hut is close to both Invercargill and Riverton, and is a popular hut on the Te Araroa Trail.

In 2024 the hut was renovated as the harsh climate and volume of visitors had taken their toll. The project ensured the integritity of the hisotric hut was maintained. A small deck/boardwalk was constructed at the front of the hut, all four exterior walls were stripped and replaced, the interior flooring was re-done, and the fireplace re-set.

Heritage

Martin’s Hut was built in 1905 by Fred Mason to house a water race maintenance worker. Racemen were employed by mining companies to maintain the race and ensure a steady supply of water for mining operations.

These men often lived by themselves in isolated environments. They faced an ongoing battle to clear fallen trees and branches, and to repair flood damage. Te Araroa – The Trail Pass

Te Araroa Trail walkers should register and purchase the Te Araroa Trail Pass.

Access is by marked route off Cascade Road. It is possible to walk between Martin’s and Turnbull’s huts and from there to Round hill following a marked trail. Be aware that the terrain in this area is challenging.
