About this hunting block
Goats and pigs are hunted in the Whangamōmona Conservation Area.
Very good goat hunting in places. Pigs and possums are also present. Recreational pig and goat hunting is popular in this area.
General information
The easily accessed Whangamomona Conservation Area is a popular goat hunting spot, with pigs also occasionally found. This is a reliable area to take younger hunters on their first hunting trip.
The steep broken hill country with deep valleys is predominantly mixed podocarp forest with hard beech on some ridge tops. Abandoned leasehold land along the Whangamomona Road is covered in mānuka scrub.
The area is bisected by the historic Whangamomona Road which is accessible to four wheel drive and ATVs in dry weather – in winter the road becomes a challenge for even experienced four wheel drive enthusiasts. The road leads to the Bridge to Somewhere.
A campground at nearby Whangamomona offers overnight opportunities.

Huts
There are no DOC huts in this reserve.
Dogs
Dogs are prohibited except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area need to get a permit from the local DOC office and have a current kiwi aversion certificate.
Avian awareness and avoidance training
To take dogs across private property, or tracks crossing farmland, you must get permission from the landowner.
