Tryphena South Conservation Area

Find out more about hunting in the southern hunting block on Aotea Great Barrier Island.

The Southern Great Barrier hunting block is made up of areas of Aotea Conservation Park south of Blind Bay Road and Grey Road in Claris and Tryphena Scenic Reserve. It is located in the south of the island. The area is predominantly steep and covered in forest.

Hunters play a vital role in stopping the spread of kauri dieback. Kauri hygiene protocols must be followed when hunting in this area.

The open season for pig hunting is 15 February to 15 December. The season is closed from 16 December to 14 February.

Some areas in this hunting block are remote and surrounded by private land. If you wish to hunt these reserves, it is up to you to arrange landowner permission to access them.

There are numerous areas of private land adjoining the Southern Great Barrier hunting block - no hunting is permitted on these areas of private land.

Dogs must have passed a recognised bird aversion assessment.

Hunters must bring their dogs and current bird aversion certificates to the Aotea Great Barrier Island Base when picking up a hunting permit so that dogs can be checked against the certificates.

There is a maximum limit of four dogs per group of hunters.

Traps for pest control may be present on any public conservation land. The traps may pose a risk to dogs. Keep your dog under control at all times.

There are no huts or campgrounds in the Southern Great Barrier hunting area.
