Rowallan Conservation Area

You can hunt red deer and wild pigs in the Rowallan Forest Conservation Area and the Lindsay Ecological Area.

The Rowallan Forest is located in western Southland to the east of Lake Hauroko and bordering Fiordland National Park. The vegetation is predominately beech forest and the terrain is rolling.

The Lindsay Ecological Area, within the Rowallan Forest, covers approximately 126 ha of moderately steep lowland hill country of beech and podocarp forest. Crown fern is the dominant ground cover.

There is access into the northern part of the Rowallan by the forestry road from the Clifden – Hauroko Road, however the network of forest roads via the Grove Burn on the south coast road is more popular.

Access to the Lindsay Ecological Area can be gained north of Tuatapere off SH99 by following forestry roads or just south of Clifden on SH99 turning onto Lillburn Valley Road/Otway Road, and then following forestry roads.

• Dogs must be registered and are not permitted in huts.
• When crossing private land, dogs are to be on a leash until well into forest and kept under control.
• DOC must be notified regarding missing or lost dogs on conservation land.
• No dogs allowed during Easter, Labour weekend and between 20 December and 31 January.

There are no DOC huts available.

The closest hut is Thicket Burn Hut which is administered by the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association.

If possuming, a permit must be obtained by visiting the DOC Murihiku Office in Invercargill.
