North Hurunui

This area is bordered by Lake Sumner, Lake Sumner Forest Park, Lakes Station in the south and Poplars Station in the east. Pigs, red deer and chamois are present in low to moderate numbers.

This area is bordered by Lake Sumner, the forest park, Lakes Station in the south and Poplars Station in the east. The terrain is moderate to steep. Vegetation is predominantly beech forest. Pigs, red deer and chamois are present in low to moderate numbers.

This is a popular area with trampers and hunters. Take precautions and identify your target.

Lakes Station is on the true left of the Hurunui River. Absolutely no hunting is permitted on this land.

Access to Lake Sumner Forest Park is via Lake Sumner Road and in part through freehold lands of the Lakes Station. Motor vehicles are not permitted beyond the locked gate and car park at the Lake Sumner end of Loch Katrine. When walking from this car park, keep to the formed and marked tracks, leave gates as you find them and do not disturb stock as the Lakes Station is a working farm.

Public walking access on The Lakes Station is subject to the public remaining on the DOC marked walking tracks, trespass may occur and all access denied if the public do not remain on the DOC marked tracks.

Boat access is possible from Loch Katrine to Lake Sumner. There is also a walking track at Windy Point on SH7.

Permission is required to cross The Lakes and Poplars stations. Both are private property. DOC is unable to provide the contact details of either station.
