Ngātokoerua Scenic Reserve

Ngātokoerua Scenic Reserve was formerly known as Erua Forest. It offers hunting for red deer, fallow, pigs and goats.

Red deer are present, with trophy potential, along with goats and pigs.

Pigs are present in a high density pig population in the part of Ngātokoerua Scenic Reserve south of the Mangaturuturu River, especially between the Mangaturuturu and the Mākara Stream.

Part of the Ruapehu Conservation Areas and Reserves open hunting area, Ngātokoerua Scenic Reserve is located on the western boundary of Tongariro National Park.

Similar to Tongariro Forest, it has been heavily modifed by logging. While there is some remnant mature forest, much of the forest is regenerating. Logging tracks and pulling ways provide access throughout the forest.

The terrain is generally easy and rolling, except for deep gorges along the rivers and streams.

Main access points are via Middle Road, Mangaturuturu East Road, Erua Road and Fishers Track behind Waimarino.

As a special condition of the open hunting permit for the area, hunting dogs that have a separate DOC issued dog control permit and a current avian certificate are allowed with an open hunting permit into this forest.

This area contains important populations of threatened North Island brown kiwi and whio/blue duck. Because of this, hunters must follow the following conditions for dog access:

• dogs must be issued with a DOC issued dog control permit for this area
• dogs must be certified as ‘kiwi safe’ through the avian aversion training (current certificate will need to be sighted by DOC when getting a dog control permit)
• the dog must be used for hunting and not be there for company
• dogs must be tied up at night
• any dogs that are lost in this area must be reported to the nearest DOC office immediately.
