Mount Studholme/ Kaiwarua

The Mt Studholme/Kaiwarua block is in the southern part of the Hunter Hills, 15 km northwest of Waimate. Species found here to hunt include wallaby, pig and the occasional red and fallow deer, chamois and tahr.

The Mt Studholme/Kaiwarua block covers an area of about 4945 hectares. The highest point is Mt Studholme at 1086 m. There is mixed broadleaf and podocarp forest on the eastern flanks which gives way to tussock. Some of the stream gullies have Dracophyllum species, matagouri and coprosma.

There are a number of access points to the eastern side: Jacksons Bush Road, Mt Studholme Road and Gunns Bush Road, all off Waimate Hunter Road.

Access to the western side is reached by following Hakataramea Highway 82 from Waimate. At the monument turn right onto Serpentine Valley Road, then turn right again onto Zig Zag Road. Take the first left onto Wahaorunga Road and then turn right onto Pentland Hills Road. After about 8.5 km this becomes Kaiwarua Road. Follow Kaiwarau Road to its end where 4WD drive tracks lead either northwest or southeast. At the end of each track are parking areas which give access to public easements across private land to the public conservation land.

Helicopter landings may be approved provided an appropriate landing permit is obtained.

There are no huts or bivvies in this area.
