Mohakatino Conservation Area

Mohakatino Conservation Area encompasses the catchment of Purupuru Stream. Possums, goats and pigs are hunted here.

Goats and pigs are present in good quantities due to the low use of this area.

The rugged country of the 3,149 ha Mohakatino Conservation Area drains into the Purupuru Stream. Wedged between the Mokau River and Waitaanga conservation areas, the Mohakatino has limited access with no tracks or facilities. The area receives no goat control by DOC hunters so goat numbers are good with the odd pig.

The landscape ranges from flat manuka dominant pakihi/wetland area in the south to steep limestone ridges featuring black beech and podocarp/hardwood in the west. The Waipapa River area is home to several giant kahikatea.

North Island brown kiwi are present. Kaka, North Island robin/toutouwai, whitehead/ pōpokotea, moreporks/ruru, parakeets, fernbirds and paua slug can also be found in the area.

Access to Mohakatino Conservation Area is possible from the Mokau River via the Mokau River Scenic Reserves.

Permission to access Mohakatino Conservation Area via private land must be gained by arrangements with adjoining landholders.

There are no DOC huts in this reserve.

Dogs are prohibited except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area need to get a permit from the local DOC office and have a current kiwi aversion certificate.

Avian awareness and avoidance training

To take dogs across private property, or tracks crossing farmland, you must get permission from the landowner.
