About this hunting block
Possums, goats and pigs are hunted in the Matirangi Conservation Area. Because there is no public access, to enter you must make arrangements with adjoining landowners.
Goats, possums and pigs are present in this reserve with a few red deer if you are lucky.
General information
With many narrow ridges and spurs which fall steeply to gorgy streams, much of the 2,399 ha Matirangi Conservation Area is difficult to access. The lower end of the conservation area has alluvial terraces and a wide swampy flat surrounds the lower Pohokura Stream.
This rugged untracked area is vegetated by tawa, kamahi, rewarewa, rimu, hinau, totara, matai, and kahikatea which dominate the canopy. The sub-storey is largely pigeonwood, horopito, heketara, putaputaweta, rangiora and lancewood.
Kiwi, North island robin /toutouwai are present.
Access
No formed public access. Access permission must be gained from local landowners.
Landholders
Permission to access Matirangi Conservation Area via private land must be gained by arrangements with adjoining landholders.

Huts
There are no DOC huts in this reserve.
Dogs
Dogs are prohibited except where authorisation has been granted by DOC. People wishing to take a dog into this area need to get a permit from the local DOC office and have a current kiwi aversion certificate.
Avian awareness and avoidance training
To take dogs across private property, or tracks crossing farmland, you must get permission from the landowner.
