General information
The Hapuakohe Ecological Area is the southernmost block of three parcels of public conservation land that largely make up the Hapuakohe Range (the other two being the Matahuru Scenic Reserve, and the Mangapiko Valley Scenic Reserve which is remnant highland forest). The terrain is steep hill country covered with kauri/hard beech podocarp forest. The total area of the Hapuakohe Ecological Area is 970 ha.
Access
The Hapuakohe Range lies approximately 50 km north-east of Hamilton and 65 km south-east of Auckland.
Access is from Mangawhara Rd.
The best hunter access is from the Matukuru/Ohinewai Road.
Landholders
This reserve is surrounded by private land except for the southern boundary, which joins Hapuakohe Conservation Area where hunting is not permitted.
Hunting is strictly prohibited on farmland. Check maps for boundaries.

Dogs
Only hunting dogs are permitted. A standard hunting permit for the North Waikato hunting reserves allows a hunter to take up to two dogs, or party of hunters a maximum of three dogs, into this reserve.
No dogs are allowed across farmland from 1 July to 30 September each year to lower the risk of stock disturbance during the calving/lambing season.
Dogs must be kept under control and not used for hunting until well within the DOC hunting area.
Dogs must be kept on a lead while using public walking and farm access ways, and until 50–100 m inside the reserve.
