Conservation Area - Tararu

Pigs are present in the Kauaeranga block. Goats are also present in low numbers.

The Kauaeranga block encompasses the Waiomu Ecological Area, Te Tipi Ecological Area, Motutapere Ecological Area and the Kauaeranga High Use Recreational Area, totalling approximately 14,500 ha. The forest types comprise lowland/coastal to secondary manuka/kanuka forest, kauri forest and sub alpine scrub land. The terrain is undulating with sharp ridges and steep guts.

The Kauaeranga block has multiple access points including the Waiomu Creek Road, Te Puru Stream Road, Tararu Creek Road, Waiotahi Road, Kauaeranga Valley Road, Kopu Hikuai Road and the Tapu Coroglen Road.

All hunters are asked to respect the rights of private land owners and farmers and gain permission from the land owner/occupier should they intend to gain access to the block across private land.

• The number of hunting dogs is limited to three per permittee.
• It is a requirement that all dogs in this block have current certification for kiwi/bird aversion training.
• Dogs must be kept under control at all times.
• Dogs are not permitted in DOC campgrounds.

Crosbies Hut – located on the loop track off the main range behind Thames it is a 4 to 6 hr walk from Thames or the Kauaeranga Valley. The hut has 10 bunks and a wood stove. Users need to book to stay at the hut. Note: Dogs are not allowed in, under or around the hut environment.

Beware of vertical mine shafts in this area.

Firearms are not permitted in the Kauaeranga High Use Recreational Area (KHURA) unless the hunter is using dogs, and then the firearm can only be used to dispatch bailed animals. See map attached to permit covering the KHURA.
