Boundary Creek

You can hunt red deer and chamois in the Boundary Creek hunting block.

Animals present are red deer and chamois in low numbers.

This block gives access to the McKerrow Range, taking in the Boundary Creek catchment as well as some of the upper slopes overlooking the head of Lake Wānaka.

The vegetation is mainly tussockland and scrub, with some mānuka/kānuka forest lower down the valley, and silver beech/tahina further up above the flats.

This block is balloted for the roar period during the months of March and April.

Opposite the Boundary Creek campsite on the Haast Highway (SH6), 7 km southeast of Makarora, a sign marks the start of a 4WD track. This winds it way up the spur on the true right of Boundary Creek. Access is by foot or horse only.

This track crosses pastoral lease land and you need landholder permission for hunting access.

Email makaroraranch@gmail.com at least 24 hours in advance of your visit. Once you have permission, firearms must be carried unloaded.

At about the 840 m contour there is a junction marked by a sign; turn right onto a track which sidles into the valley. A few hundred metres beyond the junction there is a strip of beech/tawhai forest; the hunting block begins on the other side.

Dogs are allowed in this block. No permit is required but you must send a valid worming certificate to makaroraranch@gmail.com to ensure your dog is free from hydatids and sheep measles.

The use of shotguns, shotgun-rifle combos, .22 calibre and rim-fire firearms are prohibited on public conservation land unless stated otherwise.
